Setting Up the Dosage Calculator
A start-to-finish guide for administrators. Configuration requires the Manage Dosage Calculator permission.
Values you enter here drive dose calculations in the field. Enter them from your approved protocols, double-check units and concentrations, and have a second qualified person review before going live. Changes publish to the calculator on save.
Navigate to Dosage Calculator under Entity Management. The overview page links to the three configuration areas — set them up in this order, since later pieces reference earlier ones.
1. Patient Size Categories
Manage categories → the Patient Size Categories page, with Pediatric and Adult tabs.
- Starting fresh? Click Load Defaults (shown while a tab is empty) to seed a standard set after a confirmation
- Or click Add Category and define your own: name, weight, and color
- Edit or delete any category from its row menu. Deleting warns you how many dosing rules use that class
Pediatric categories are the weight/size classes members will pick from (and that per-class dosing bands are built on).
2. Protocols
Manage protocols → the Protocols page.
- Click Add Protocol and give it a name (e.g., "Cardiac Arrest")
- Optionally attach reference documents from your Documents library so members can open the source protocol right from the calculator
- The Active toggle controls visibility: Deactivate hides a protocol from the field without deleting it — useful for seasonal or retired protocols
- Deleting a protocol is guarded and can be undone from the confirmation toast
3. Medications
Manage medications → the Medications page, with All / Active / Inactive tabs, search, and a drug-class filter.
Click Add Medication — only a name is required, everything else is optional at first. Then open the medication to complete its detail page:
Details
Generic name, drug class, and a collapsible Clinical Reference (indication, contraindication, warning, notes). The Active toggle — in the edit form — controls whether the medication appears in the calculator at all.
Concentrations
Click Add in the Concentrations card. Each concentration specifies:
- Medication Form (vial, tablet, spray, etc.)
- Type, Weight + Weight Unit, and Volume + Volume Unit (e.g., 10 mg per 2 cc)
A live "Saves as …" preview shows exactly how it will read. A concentration can't be deleted while a dosing rule still references it.
Dosing Rules
The Pediatric Dosing and Adult Dosing cards each list rules by route. Click Add to open the dose dialog:
- Concentration - Pick one; the available Routes adjust to the selected form (e.g., a liquid vial offers IV/IO/IM/IN/ET/PR, a tablet offers PO/ODT/SL)
- Dose type - Fixed, Per Kilogram, or Range, with the dose amount(s) and unit
- Maximum dose - An optional cap on the calculated total
- Vary dose by weight class (pediatric) - Override the calculation per patient size category when your protocol specifies banded doses
- Protocols - Tag the rule to the protocols it belongs to
A live preview at the bottom shows the resulting dose line as members will see it. Save with Add Dose (or Save Changes when editing).
4. Preview and Go Live
Back on the Dosage Calculator overview page:
- The status pill flips from Setup needed to Calculator Ready once at least one patient size category and one medication exist
- Click Preview calculator to use the calculator exactly as members will in the field — verify a few known doses against your protocols before announcing it to your team
